About FEX Core™ SDK
FEX-Core — Programmatic access to forensics image files via a comprehensive SDK.
FEX-Core is the same forensic acquisition and access engine that drives Forensic Explorer, trusted by law-enforcement, government, and corporate investigators worldwide. It opens and reads industry-standard evidence containers — E01, Ex01, L01, Lx01, AD1, AFF4, VMDK, VHD, VHDX, DMG, raw DD/001, split images — with strict integrity guarantees, full sector-level access, and a stable, well-defined API. If you are building a forensic platform, or an automated e-discovery processing pipeline, FEX-Core gives your application a forensically sound foundation without the years of low-level format work that would otherwise stand between you and a shipping product.
FEX-Core is distributed as a native Windows DLL with Python bindings implemented using pure ctypes wrappers. The bindings do not depend on compiled extension modules, avoiding a direct dependency on a specific CPython ABI.
As a result, the same library can be accessed from Python or integrated into applications written in C++, C#, or other languages that can load a DLL. The API surface is deliberately small: initialize the library, open an image, enumerate volumes and files, and read bytes.
Performance is engineered for evidence-grade workloads — streaming reads from large E01 sets, predictable memory behavior, and thread-safe access patterns suitable for high-throughput forensic use cases.
FEX-Core is developed and licensed by GetData Forensics, the makers of Forensic Explorer, Mount Image Pro, and Recover My Files — tools used daily inside police forensic units, federal agencies, and digital-forensic consultancies worldwide.
When you license FEX-Core you get more than a binary: you get the same format coverage GetData ships in its flagship products, ongoing format updates as new evidence types appear in the field, and direct technical support from the engineers who wrote the code. If you are building forensic software and you want the imaging layer handled correctly the first time, talk to us about a FEX-Core license.
